Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter are the two main bacterial strains in AquaClean N1. Nitrosomonas bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite and Nitrobacter convert nitrite to nitrate. AquaClean N1 with selected bacteria is autotrophic bacteria "they can use carbon dioxide as the sole carbon source", and they grow relatively slowly. Their processing capacity and growth rate are affected by the environmental factors necessary for the nitrification process.
